Seventeen Matters traversed to January 2012 Assizes

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OUT of the 31 cases that were listed for the 2011 September Criminal Assizes, 17 of those matters were traversed while 14 were disposed of.

     

    Out of the 14 matters that were disposed, nine matters returned with guilty verdicts by a 12-member jury, two chose to plead guilty to their charges and three matters ended in not guilty verdicts.

     

    Of those nine matters, Ourtic Gillard was found guilty of robbery and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, Alpha Duporte who was found guilty of murder and of two counts of attempted murder and is yet to be sentenced.

     

    Devon Williams was fined and had his license taken away for two years after he was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and Glenville Isles was found guilty of attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend and has not been sentenced yet.

     

    Akeem Christopher and Curtis Isaac were both found guilty of building breaking and larceny at Evelyn’s Grouping and are scheduled to be sentenced while Akiel Warner and Curtis Isaac were both found guilty and sentenced to four and three years respectively, for two counts of armed robbery.
    Chadin Buchanan was found guilty of robbery and received seven years.

     

    A 12-member jury also found Clive Grant guilty of housebreaking and larceny and he was subsequently sentenced to eight years while Exzavier Elliott, Jervain Rawlins and Phillip Jones were all found guilty of armed robbery and assault and will be sentenced soon.

     

    The two men who chose to plead guilty for their crimes were Mario Harvey who was charged with rape received 13 years and four months in prison and George Archibald for the wounding with intent of his friend, was ordered to pay a fine.

     

    Two men were found not guilty of two separate rape incidents while another man was found not guilty for indecent assault.

     

    The list of traversed matters for January 2012 are that of Dennis Doras charged with larceny, Nelson Challenger, Shenroy Francis, Jami Rawlins, Glenroy Smithen and Moses Gardener all jointly charged with murder; Baba Tunde Dami Lola Alonge is facing fraud and false pretence charges and Devon Ryan charged with attempted murder.

     

    Amal Whyte and Devon Fyfield are jointly charged with murder; Jahdell Browne, Denver Fyfield, Melvina Kelly are all facing individual murder charges and will hopefully have their cases heard at the next assizes.

     

    The traversed matters also include that of brothers Chaddin and Kassim Buchanan, who are jointly charged with wounding with intent; a man is facing an incest charge; Kern Cabey is charged with endangering life or to cause serious injury to property while Denzil Huggins, whose case ended in a hung jury, had his case traversed.

     

    Two men are jointly facing a rape charge while another is facing indecent assault.  Clive Grant is facing possession of housebreaking implements while another man faces unlawful carnal knowledge and Donley Saunders faces a fraudulent conversation charge.

     

    The date for the opening of the January Assizes has not been set as yet but will be presided over by resident judge, His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas.
