Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat, December 14th, 2011  – There is only one week left to make a contribution to the Draft Physical Development Plan 2012-2022 as the 60-day public consultation ends on Thursday 22nd December.

The public is being encouraged to review the land use zoning and development control policies in the PDP to see how the policies will impact on plans for development in the future. The consulting team is also interested in hearing suggestions for improvements to the document and land use policy.

The PDP provides a land use planning framework and a strategy for infrastructure development. It will influence planning application decisions and will guide the overall development of Montserrat over the coming years, a statement from the Physical Planning Unit reads.

“It will be the start for some exciting new community projects such as a proposed local market in Salem and will help to guide development for tourism, housing, agriculture and industry. The PDP provides a framework to deal with issues including land use conflicts, protecting environmental resources, providing more recreational and community space and reducing utilities costs and minimising the risk of natural hazards through building design.”

Since the start of the consultation, around 60 individuals and stakeholder groups have provided comments and the dedicated website has received more than 4300 hits. Feedback has been received from both residents on island as well as nationals abroad.

The PDP Draft document can be viewed online at www.ppu.gov.ms and there you can find images and posters from the launch exhibition and other details about the plans for various areas of the island. There are also hard copies of the documents in the Library in Brades, the PPU office and the LIME office in Sweeney’s.

Everyone is encouraged to leave their comments in the boxes located in each area. These can also be emailed to ppu@gov.ms addressed to Mr Franklyn Greenaway, Chief Physical Planner.

In January next year all comments received will be reviewed by the Planning and Development Authority who will vote on all changes to be taken forward to the Final PDP 2012-2022.
