Junior calypsonians to battle for supremacy tomorrow

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWELVE of the island’s budding calypsonians, who appear prepped and ready, will be vying for supremacy tomorrow night (Dec. 16) at the Sugar Mas’ 40/40 Junior Calypso Competition slated for Carnival Village.

     

    The young bunch made a public appearance late last week at the first and only Junior Calypso tent which was held at the Independence Square (Dec. 9), following the Sugar Mas’ 40/40 Youth Rally.

     

    Presenting some hard-hitting, enlightening and eye-popping social commentaries, the youngsters provoked much thought about several issues affecting St. Kitts and Nevis, including crime and immorality.

     

    The young artistes also selected the order in which they would perform at the competition.

     

    Their pieces and their order of performance on Friday are as follow:

     

    1. Damian ‘Singing Casper’ Burroughs – Just Dance
    2. Jahniah ‘Lady Niah’ Roach – A Real Life Lesson
    3. K’Moya ‘Singing Solution’ Laws – Candle In The Wind
    4. Danny ‘Mighty Dan’ Isles – Take U Country Back
    5. Danielle ‘Princess D’ Allen – Change The World
    6. Jackiema ‘ Miz Charismatic’ Flemming – What More
    7. Rhasaani ‘Mighty Saani’ Gordon – I Will Sing
    8. Tereke ‘Mighty Reke’ Rawlins – My Nation
    9. Joel ‘King Scribbles’ Henry – Gangsta
    10. Shajunee ‘Singing Shaddy’ Gumbs – Who Is Fighting For Me
    11. Shamar ‘Mighty Midget’ Pemberton – Morality

     

    Last year’s competition was won by Leonardo ‘Calypso Leo’ Robinson, who will be last on stage for this year’s competition. He will be defending his crown with his social commentary entitled “Murder Rate”.

     

    His rendition for the 2010/2011 competition was “Infected With Rage”.

     

    The previous year’s winner of that competition was Karessa ‘Mz Independent’ Willet, who took the crown in both 2008/2009 and 2009/2010. She however did not participate in last year’s competition.

     

    Calypso pundits anticipate that this competition would be keenly-contested and they are expecting sterling performances from the contestants.

     

    The calypso competition will be held after the Talented Teen competition which is slated to begin at 8:00 p.m. also at Carnival Village.
