Kittitian Social Commentator - Panelist for The Peaceful Caribbean Conference

By: Mutryce A. Williams, Press Release

Mutryce A. Williams, a native of the federation of St Kitts and Nevis, who hails from the historic village of St Paul’s, St Kitts has been selected as a panelist for The Peaceful Caribbean Conference, which would be held at the Hilton Resort Needham’s Point Barbados on April 20, 2012.

The theme of the conference which is being organized by Caribbean News Now is “The Peaceful Caribbean Conference 2012-Focus on Solutions.” The vision of the conference is to have the Caribbean region regain its rightful place in the world as a peaceful and stable place. The mission is to reestablish the perceptions and realities of the Caribbean region as a peaceful and stable place for residents and visitors alike. The objective of the conference is to successfully execute a Peaceful Caribbean Conference, which produces and activates at the end, an action plan for establishing a Peaceful Caribbean Initiative.

According to the Peaceful Caribbean Conference website, (http://www.peacefulcaribbean.com/) “Times have changed for many countries across the Caribbean, where the rise of criminal gangs has turned once-peaceful islands into little short of battle zones. Drug traffickers have helped drive up the crime rates by introducing firearms and narcotics with a street value exceeding the size of the Caribbean’s legal economy. Gang-related shootings have become common in the Caribbean, according to a new report on global homicides by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Regional experts are concerned that a culture of violence has become entrenched in the islands, where nearly 70 percent of homicides are committed by firearms.”

Additionally the Peaceful Caribbean Conference website states, “With this in mind, Caribbean News Now is holding its first regional conference in Bridgetown, Barbados, on addressing the increasing problem of crime in the Caribbean, featuring top personalities from the Caribbean and the US, as well as the publication’s top editors and contributors. There will be key addresses and panel discussions on the major issues confronting peace and stability in the Caribbean. It promises to be a hugely important event for anyone interested in the future of the Caribbean as a place to live and visit.”

Mutryce who began writing for the St Kitts Labourspokesman in October 2002 and has since then been published in several other local and regional publications such as the Leeward’s Times and Caribbean News Now said that she is indeed honoured to be a part of this timely and very important initiative. She said that she is humbled by the selection, as the cadre of panelists, speakers and moderators is a quite distinguished and impressive one. She also said, “When I began writing on social issues several years ago, it was as an impassioned and idealistic young woman who wanted what was best for St. Kitts and Nevis, the Caribbean, and humanity in general, however the tides have changed. I have a vested interest in seeing my native country, and the region restored to the once tranquil place that it was. I am the mother of two young sons, a high risk demographic, as this is the demographic that are the perpetrators and the victims of these crimes. I do not want either of my sons to fall in either category, and I do not wish this for any parent. It is time to restore the region to its once tranquil state. It is time to start focusing on the solutions.”

The mother of Aidan and Ethan, Mutryce holds a Masters of Politics degree and is currently pursuing doctoral studies in Public Policy Administration with a double concentration in Terrorism, Mediation and Peace, and Homeland Security Policy and Coordination. Mutryce says that her goal is to conduct research that will add to the body of knowledge, and ultimately influence public policy decisions in the area of terrorism, mediation and peace as it relates to the Caribbean region, as this is still a new phenomenon.

Mutryce represented the federation of St Kitts and Nevis on the UNESCO Executive Board (Paris), serving on the Group of Experts on Financial and Administrative Matters. She was also a member of the St Kitts Electoral Reform Consultative Electoral Reform Committee, SSMC Transition Management Team, UNESCO Youth PATH National Coordinator, and is the Founder of LYLAA. She is the St Kitts and Nevis Representative for the Caribbean Alumni for Regional Progress – Midwestern State University Alumni Chapter. In early 2011 Mutryce founded the Agnes A. Williams Aspire and Achieve Memorial Scholarship in honour of her grandmother, who played a pivotal role in her development.

Mutryce defines her life’s purpose as helping and advancing the causes of others. She has an extensive volunteer career that involves working to create HIV/AIDS awareness, Special Olympics, and promoting gender equality and democracy; however, she considers herself first and foremost a child/youth advocate. A true daughter of the Caribbean, Mutryce is a calypso enthusiast, who dabbles in art, poetry, debate, writing plays, drama, dance and the preservation of Caribbean culture.
