Gas shortage or no gas shortage?

A long line of vehicles waiting to be serviced at the Texaco gas station opposite the JNF Hospital

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE long lines that one may see at the various gas stations is as a result of a rumour that has been circulating about a shortage in gasoline.

SKNVibes understands that the distributor that may have the shortage is SOL EC St. Kitts-Nevis.

SKNVibes contacted Managing Director of C&C Trading and local distributor for SOL LPG Scott Caines who refuted the allegations stating that there is no shortage.

"I have no knowledge of that [shortage], I don't know where that information came from," Caines told SKNVibes.

This media house however confirmed that Caines' statement was indeed correct, because there is no shortage of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) but gasoline.

One employee at a SOL gas station claimed that there is no gasoline and that SOL gas stations are still open but are only able to supply customers with LPG, beverages and confectionary.

Even though the stations are open for business, there are no visible signs of vehicles at various outlets, including the one on the island's main road opposite the JNF Hospital and also that on Victoria Road and Cayon Street.

SKNVibes visited the Texaco Gas Station opposite the JNF hospital and the outlet in New Road, where a number of persons were seen filling their tanks as well as large containers.

When asked if there was a shortage, one of the workers said that they are not experiencing any, so there is no need for customers to be alarmed.

SKNVibes also visited the Delta Petroleum 24-hour gas station in Camps Village and was told by Station Manager Samantha Huggins that they too are not experiencing a shortage of gasoline.

"Customers do not have to be afraid of acquiring gas for vehicles, as there is no shortage at the Delta Gas Station," she explained.

The rumours about the shortage in gasoline started floating around sometime yesterday (Dec. 14).
