BASSETERRE St. Kitts, December 15th 2011 (SKNIS) - Law enforcement officials in St. Kitts and Nevis will continue to be exposed to advanced training from regional and international agencies as an important part of Government’s Anti-Crime Strategy.
 
During the recently concluded 2012 Budget debate in the National Assembly, Prime Minister the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas explained that “over the past three years, approximately 60 security professionals have received training in various disciplines such as maritime repair, civil aviation security, trafficking and border security as well as forensic and financial crimes investigations.”
 
In 2011, 40 Police and Defence Force Officers explored techniques of crime scene management at training provided by the United States (U.S.) Embassy Force Protection Detachment Programme in collaboration with the U.S. Naval Investigative Service (NCIS). Also, four officers from the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) received training in financial investigation, money laundering and intelligence gathering. This course was facilitated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
 
Commissioner of Police Celvin G. Walwyn has also been networking with agencies he has worked for, or is familiar with, to lend assistance. He told SKNIS that during the recent International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference held in Chicago, he met with Commissioners of Police from the Caribbean and discussed a proposed witness protection programme.

Authorities from the United States Virgin Islands also partnered with the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force to share techniques of street enforcement with a local inspector who has conducted training for the tactical unit Delta Squad.
 
Additionally, officials from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in Florida have agreed to provide homicide training as well as a course on hostage negotiations. The facilitators will be provided without cost to Government.
 
Commissioner Walwyn reported that these sessions will be held in the New Year and added that he will continue to work with Government to upgrade the capabilities of the men and women within the security forces.
