Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, 15th December, 2011- All residents in the Seventh and Eighth Districts are encouraged to enter the festive “Deck Your Yard” holiday contest before registration closes on  Friday, 16th December.

Developed by the East Beautification Committee in partnership with the BVI Tourist Board as an incentive for community members to beautify their properties during the month-long Thanksgiving to Christmas period, the competition has drawn a number of families and individuals. Many eager participants have submitted entry forms and have already begun outlining creative tactics to help make their yard stand out.

“We want people to know that it’s not too late to enter and that they don’t have to conduct a big overhaul of their yard to participate. They can make little changes to the exterior such as cleaning their yard, pruning the bushes, cutting the grass, planting flowers and adding paint to walls and fences.

These small details can make big improvements to a property,” said Angela Burnett Penn, East Beautification Committee President. “We’re just excited to see what people choose to do.” Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second and a third place winner in addition to a host of treats from area businesses sponsoring the event.

Contest guidelines are as follows: To enter, persons must reside in a house or an apartment in the Seventh or Eighth District; apartment dwellers need only be responsible for sprucing the exteriors to the front of their building.

Improvements may be made to yards until Christmas day when the competition comes to a close. Judges will visit participant’s yards twice – once on Sunday, 18th December to capture the yard in its initial phase followed by a second visit after Christmas to judge the final results. Yards will be judged based on cleanliness, maintenance, plant selection and design.

Discount plants and paints are available to persons when they register. Entry forms can be found and submitted in all area supermarkets, the Mangrove Bakery, area restaurants and participating area businesses.
