BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MOST of the contestants who participated in the Junior Calypso Competition last night (Dec. 16) at Carnival Village were males, but it was the females who dominated the event by taking the top three spots.

The competition featured 11 calypsonians - seven males and four females - and by the end of it K’Moya ‘Singing Solution’ Laws’ 265 points won her the Junior Calypso Monarch crown.

Damian ‘Singing Casper’ Burroughs performed his rendition ‘Just Dance’, while Jahniah ‘Lady Niah’ Roach sang a piece entitled ‘A Real Life Lesson’, ‘Take U Country Back’ was done by Danny ‘Mighty Dan’ Isles, and Danielle ‘Princess D’ Allen presented her tune ‘Change The World’.

‘What More’ was rendered by Jackiema ‘Miz Charismatic’ Flemming, ‘I Will Sing’ by Rhasaani ‘Mighty Saani’ Gordon, Joel ‘King Scribbles’ Henry presented his tune ‘Gangsta’, Shajunee ‘Singing Shaddy’ Gumbs questioned ‘Who Is Fighting For Me’, while Shamar ‘Mighty Midget’ Pemberton addressed issues of ‘Morality’, and Leonardo ‘Calypso Leo’ Robinson shared his views on the Federation’s ‘Murder Rate’.

First Runner-up was King Scribbles who amassed a total of 236 points, while Miz Charismatic was adjudged Second Runner-up with 224 points and Lady Niah, with 220 points, captured the Third Runner-up spot.

All of the young calypsonians seemed to have success in conveying their message, most of which spoke of social ills that if not corrected soon would wreak havoc on the society.

For Singing Solution’s piece, a mother appeared onstage weeping over her son’s lifeless body which was draped in a white sheet. And as her song suggested, he lived by the gun and died by it.

In another scene of her presentation, a casket borne by six persons was brought onstage, which caused some to reflect on the many who lost their lives as a result of gun violence.

A candle stood lit on a small table at centre stage, and as Singing Solution sang “…one day when you think that the storm is done, boy, the rain will out your flame”, signalling the end of her presentation, the bereaved mother blew out the candle and left.

SKNVibes understands that Singing Solution’s song was written by the reigning Senior Calypso Monarch, King Pungwah.

Last year’s Junior Calypso King was the Mighty Leo. He however did not place during this year’s competition.
