    ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, December 16th, 2011 – In an effort to continue addressing the needs of persons with disabilities, the Ministry of Health and Social Development has released a special documentary highlighting the achievements of persons with disabilities living in the Virgin Islands.

    The documentary will air tonight on JTV Channel 55 at 6pm and CBN Channel 51 at 7pm, and will be repeatedly broadcast during this month. The public is invited to tune into local television stations to gain further insight on the achievements and challenges of persons with disabilities living in the Virgin Islands.

     

    Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mrs. Carolyn Stoutt Igwe stated, “This year we wanted to celebrate International Day for Persons with Disabilities in a unique way.”

     

    The Deputy Secretary said, “It is very important that we seek to raise awareness about the subject of disabilities with the hope that all of us will become more sensitive to the needs of these special persons who live among us.”
    In commemoration of International Day for Persons with Disabilities observed on December 3, the documentary showcases the accomplishments of various persons with disabilities in the community. It is a compilation of highlights featuring the students of the Eslyn Henley Richez Learning Centre participating in various activities which include the BVI Special Olympics Team and the Buddy Walk.

     

    It also features personal interviews with local musician Mr. Keith Fahie; Elmore Stoutt High School Student, Ms. Daniela St. Marthe; Public Works Department employee, Mr. Glenford Freeman; and H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Student, Mr. Dondre Tyson.

     

    The needs of persons with disabilities remains a priority for the Ministry of Health and Social Development, and the Ministry will continue to partner with the Ministry of Education and Culture and other government agencies to address some of the pressing issues.

     

    In the coming months, a National Disability Coordinating Committee will also be launched. This will comprise of public and private stakeholders to provide strategic advice and advocacy on the promotion of social inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in the community.

     

    Among other projects, the committee will be charged with developing a Disabilities Action Plan and reviewing the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with a view to making recommendations for its extension to the Virgin Islands.

     

    The annual observance of the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

     

    It also seeks to increase awareness of opportunities to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

     

    The Ministry of Health and Social Development endeavours to provide leadership which promotes health, social wellness and a safe environment as positive resources for maintaining healthy lifestyles. Among other things, the ministry is responsible for safe-guarding the health and social development of the Territory.
