Basseterre, St. Kitts (February 9, 2004): New permanent secretary in the Ministry of Community, Social Development and Gender Affairs, Linda Adams says this post will highlight some of the passions that have driven her during her lifetime.

Ms. Adams who worked as a teacher for most of her career says her interest in human development and advancement is key to her functioning as permanent secretary in this ministry.

The new permanent secretary said she would like to see the reconstruction of the Juvenile Co-ed Rehabilitation Centre within her first year. This, she hopes, will address some of the issues facing troubled youth in the society. She added that this would likely lead to a reduction in juvenile crime.

Ms Adams praised the initiative of the ministry for its foresight in planning the restructuring of the institution into a co-ed facility, as this would be more reflective of society and would help the children to adjust in a more balanced manner.

Emphasizing the fact that the Programme for the Eradication of Poverty is one of government’s priority areas, she said it would demand her attention and stated her intention to use her energies toward this end.

Describing her assets in undertaking this new leadership role, Ms Adams identified maturity and an acute understanding of her fellow human beings as instrumental.

Ms Adams commended her predecessor Ms Rosalyn Hazelle for leaving a legacy of commitment to achieving the goals of the ministry as well as a clearly defined path in pursuing avenues towards human development.

The new permanent secretary met with her ministry staff earlier today to discuss the way forward in the areas of child welfare, poverty eradication, counselling, elderly care, gender affairs among others.
