BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 21st, 2011 (CUOPM) – Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas on Tuesday paid tribute to the late educator and former electoral official, Mr. Charles (Charlie) Gumbs, who died on Sunday.
“Charlie has been a public servant of outstanding repute for many, many years. He has served the interest of the people of this country. He has educated the Nation and anyone who has been engaged in the education of the people of the Nation, has to be an outstanding citizen,” said Prime Minister Douglas during his weekly radio programme “Ask the Prime Minister.”
Dr. Douglas said Mr. Gumbs has served in several other capacities after leaving the education fraternity.
“I want to extend to his children, brother and sisters and other close family members, my personal condolences, prayers and support at this time,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
Mr. Gumbs is survived by 24 children, 36 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a brother and two sisters.
The funeral service has been set for Thursday 29th December at the Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral on East Independence Square Street at 3 p.m.
Dr. Douglas also expressed sympathy to the family of the late Wilfred Morson, also known as Brother Nathaniel Dorset, who passed away Tuesday.
