BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MOLDING the youth towards a positive career path was one of the aims demonstrated yesterday [Wednesday, April, 30] at the Basseterre High School (BHS) when the learning institution hosted a Career Day.

According to Ron Dublin-Collins, one of the Guidance Counsellors at the school, the Career Day serves as an opportunity to provide students with career choices and options.

Collins said that the Career Day consisted of a training session held in the morning with fifth form students of the school and facilitated by the St. Kitts Rotary Club - a sponsor of the event.

The students were trained in resume writing and interview skills that they would need when seeking employment.

While in the afternoon on the school’s grounds a Career Fair was held for the students to better understand the opportunities that lie in the banking, nursing and medical professions while others provided opportunities for further learning. ~~Adz:Right~~

Members of 16 professions were invited to participate in the fair including the Police Force, Fire and Rescue Services, Defense Force, International University of Nursing, Customs and Excise, St. Kitts Nevis Port Authority, the Met Office, and Project Strong.

Former BHS student Fire Sub-Officer Davron Clarke said that it was a great privilege for the Fire Unit to educate and help motivate the students on their career path.

Clarke said that before becoming a fire fighter he was motivated towards that career choice because of the many fires he experienced in and around his community.

“So that gave me the drive and the motivation and the courage to go out and save lives, and we’re hoping today we can motivate more persons to become fire officers and in the field of fire fighting,” he said.

Some of the equipment the Fire Department had on display were the Jaws of Life and pumps, and members also demonstrated fire drill exercises and used videos to provide students a better understanding of the profession.

“I’m very pleased to come back here on this special day to motivate our youth so they can be more aware of their future, if they need to become a fire officer or to serve the genaral public on another level,” he said.

Collins said that they are hoping to make the Career Day an annual event.
