ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, December 23rd, 2011 -- As we celebrate with family members and friends this holiday season it is imperative that you know what to do in the event of a fire. It is recommended that you contact the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Services Department before trying to fight a fire.

This should always be primary for your own safety. In instances where you think you will be at risk, leave the fire to the professional fire-fighters and escape to safety.

Most home fires occur between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. During such times fire deaths are likely and this statistic increases between midnight and 4 a.m. when most people are asleep.

The danger in home/building fire is the smoke. Early warning is key in making your escape. You may be unable to see very well in a smoke filled room. The smoke and toxic gases may cause dizziness or disorientation. In the confusion, one can easily become lost or trapped in the home/building. All are encouraged to understand that their safety depends upon quickly leaving the home/building. The following safety tips will help to minimise the fire hazard over the holiday season.

1. Turn off Christmas lights when you are not at home and when going to sleep
2. Don’t overload electrical cords /flex cords
3. Use only lights designed for outdoor and for weather condition
4. If unsure of your electrical capacity get professional advise
5. If you are sleepy don’t start cooking
6. Put lighters and matches out of the reach of children
7. Fire crackers are a no, they are illegal
8. Candles must not be left unattended
9. Make sure cooking or warning appliances are in good working condition

Fire Alert Device
It is important to install smoke detectors in the home. Make sure they are in good working condition and that the battery is checked and changed every six months. Smoke detectors can alert family members to the presence of smoke or fire before it is too late. Having a fire extinguisher on hand could also prove effective to fight a fire in its early stages.

Escape Plan
Members of the family should know how to get safely outside by at least two routes, especially from upper floors. Never put locks on bars, windows or doors that cannot be opened from the inside.
