BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SHAKKI STARFIRE and Mighty Takeover are the new Beaumont Park Soca Monarch Groovy and Power winners who took the crowns in the early morning of Saturday, December 24.
The show which began over an hour late and had a much smaller crowd than last year was held on Dec. 23, at the Sugar Mill in Warner Park.
Shakki Starfire won the Groovy segment with ‘Party Plenty’ and amassed a total of 247 points while Mighty Takeover amassed a total of 257 points with ‘Insane’ in the Power segment.
Shakki Starfire whose real name is Jacinth Cao, is known for her electrifying performances and stage entrance.
At the beginning of her groovy song several masquerades entered the stage and started performing and low and behold, there was Shakki dressed in a masquerade outfit performing with them.
She also ended her performance with some mocko jumbies and was also on stilts. Her performance was an edge over another crowd favorite Ali Dee whose powerful voice was impressive that night.
The first runner-up position for the groovy went to Ali Dee who sang ‘With or Without You’ with 225 points,
The second runner-up in the groovy segment went to Stitch in Time who sang “You Make Your Clothes Look Good’ with 222 points.
The other competitors in the groovy category were Cinnamon, X-Man and Nickail, Queen Anastasia who had also made the groovy finals did not participate in the competition.
POWER SEGMENT
In the Power segment Mighty Takeover seemed to have had the most crowd participation especially when he jumped down into the crowd and had everyone going ‘insane’.
Many of the performers incorporated fireworks, confetti, flags and dancers into their performances.
The first runner-up in the Power was Stitch in Time with ‘Party Hearty’ enabling him to amass 223 points.
Second runner-up in the Power category went to Mighty Honesty who sang ‘Sing Stupidness’ with 216 points.
The former Power king, Konris Maynard had originally tied in the Groovy segment for second runner-up however, in the judging of competitions for the carnival event a high and low scoring system is used. It was explained that both Stitch in Time and Konris’ highest scores were revised and it was announced that the former had the higher scores.
The crowd also learnt that some of the performers of the night stayed too long onstage and lost points because of that.
The other Power competitors were Shakki Starfire, Ali Dee, Mr. World, Contenda, Dimepiece, Fantastic Tunda and Konris.
