Larceny suspects fill Basseterre lockups for Christmas

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –THE Basseterre Police lockups are almost filled to capacity with persons who are suspected to have been involved in a number of offences including recent break-ins.

     

    Speaking with this publication, the Officer-in-Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, Inspector Charles Smithen, said that the police had recently launched an operation in which search warrants were issued, and a number of persons of interest were arrested and are currently in custody at the Basseterre Police Station.

     

    Smithen also said that a number of stolen properties including cellular phones were taken into police custody during the operation and the suspects are likely to be charged very soon.

     

    He explained that following the recent spate of break-ins in Basseterre and other parts of the island, members of the law enforcement agency would not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice.

     

    Smithen declared that the operation would continue throughout the Christmas and Carnival season and beyond, with the primary aim of making residents of and visitors to St. Kitts a safer place to live and visit respectively.

     

    Over the past two months there has been an increase in break-ins and robberies, and most of the victims have been business owners.
     
    Among the business houses that have been victims of banditry are J’s Service Station in Sandy Point, Bobsy’s Restaurant and Bar in Frigate Bay, Indulgencies on Burdon Street in Basseterre, Steve’s Enterprise, Smart Fit and Junie’s Culture Shop, all situated on Central Street, Basseterre.
