BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AUTHORITIES on Nevis have reported that a juvenile has been arrested and charged with the  murder of 17-year-old Zamique Heyliger.

The incident – which was registered as the Federation’s 33rd murder for the year – occurred on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) in the vicinity of Dr. Walwyn’s Plaza on the Island Main Road.

Reports indicate that it was about 11:25 p.m. that Heyliger’s fatal injuries were inflicted.  It was reported that he was seen running before collapsing and after being transported to the Alexandra Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

He was believed to have been stabbed, which was confirmed by a press release issued by the District C Branch of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.

It informs that an autopsy was performed on the young man’s remains on Wednesday (Dec. 28) by resident Pathologist Dr. Adrian Nunez who determined that his death was as a result of “hypovolemic shock and bilateral massive hemothorax as a result of penetrating wounds produced by a knife”.

The name of the individual who was formally arrested and charged with Heyliger’s murder has not been divulged as he is a juvenile – 16-years-old. The Division C police have however indicated that the young man was remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison.

“The police would like to express gratitude to the general public for providing information which led to the arrest of the offender. We also crave your continued support in our crime fighting efforts as were seek to bring to justice, those who offend the law,” the communique concluded.

Heyliger is said to have taken up residence in Stoney Grove, Nevis shortly before his demise, and is the son of popular local musician and artiste, Mick Stokes.

Investigations into Heyliger’s death are ongoing.
