Kittitian Lisa Eddy who is currently pursuing studies
at the Cameron University, in Oklahoma has been
awarded a scholarship from the Broadcast Education
Association (BEA).
Eddy, a junior radio-television major was awarded the
Helen Sioussat/Fay Wells scholarship in the amount
of $1,250 for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The scholarship represents one of only 15 such awards
given nationwide by the BEA. Eddy's honor is also the
first time a CU student has been awarded a BEA
scholarship since the inception of Cameron's
radio/television degree concentration in 1985.
"Lisa is an outstanding representative for the radio/television
area here at Cameron," said Stephen Adams, an assistant
professor of communications. "This type of national
recognition rewards the hard work she has put into her
studies and her work in our department."
Eddy will be officially presented the scholarship award during
the BEA's annual conference April 21-23 in Las Vegas.
BEA is the professional development association for professors, industry professionals and
students involved in teaching and research related to radio, television and other electronic media.
Cameron University, along with eight other Oklahoma university and colleges, is among the
250 institutions that belong to the BEA.
Eddy expressed to SKNVibes.com how she felt about the award.
"I am the first Kittitian to receive such prestigious award and I am indeed very honored," Eddy said. "I am not
only making myself and my family proud but I believe I am also making my country proud."
Eddy added that she also received a second scholarship/award on Monday, January 10, 2005 called the McMahon
Fine Arts Scholarship.
This scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding student in the Communications Department at Cameron
University. The award is $600 and is for the Spring and Fall semesters where the total will be $1,200.
Presently she is a member of the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, The Ebony Society- which is basically a society that
focuses on the achievements of black people and is also a member of the Students of the Caribbean Alliance at her school.
Last February she entered the Miss Black Cameron University Pageant and placed first runner-up.
"So I have been very active academically and otherwise at the school, not to mention I have been on the President's Honor
list every semester since being at Cameron," Eddy commented.
To be on that list one has to maintain a 4.0 GPA. Eddy has also received several other awards since being at Cameron and
is very proud of her accomplishments to date.
When asked what is next for her after graduating from the University in 2006, Eddy said that her location of residence is a
major deciding factor in what she intends to do after graduation.
"I am uncertain as to exactly what I want to do but with my passion for radio and television I would love to do something
in that field," she said. "But we are in an ever changing world and I continue to keep my eyes open for the best opportunity
on the market in my fields of concentration."
Eddy is presently pursuing a double major in Radio and Television and Psychology with a minor in Languages.
