SKNAAA has high hopes for 2012 Athletic Year

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOLLOWING a successful 2011, the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association is excited and optimistic about this year’s Athletic season.

     

    According to a press release from the PRO Evris Huggins, the last season could be described as epic at the youth, junior and senior levels.

     

    “Almost 50 records were broken at the Interschool Championship and the RAMS Primary School Championship; National records were broken; we remained undefeated at the Leeward Island Youth Level; we received our first CARIFTA record in the 40-year history of the championships; and our relay boys exploded onto the podium of the World Championships and Pan American Games,” Huggins said.

     

    For 2012, the association is expecting more exciting performances as competitions have now intensified over the past 12 months. 

     

    “Our brand, St. Kitts-Nevis, has strengthened mainly due to our podium appearances on the regional and international scene,” he added.

     

    The Federation will be hosting five championships for this year: National Junior Championships scheduled for (March 11); TDC Interschool Championships (March 23 – 25); RAMS Primary School Championships, March 30 – April  1; National Invitational and Club Championships on June 3; and OECS Invitational on June 10.

     

    Some of the other meets of importance to the St. Kitts-Nevis athletes are the Central America & Caribbean Junior Championships in San Salvador from June 29 to July 1; the North American, Central America and Caribbean U-23 Championships which will be held in Mexico; and the World Junior Championships which will be held in Spain.

     

    “Of course, the main attraction for 2012 is the Olympic Games in London. Most persons are excited about the potential appearance of our relay boys who will likely compete against the who’s who in athletics,” said Huggins.

     

    The Olympic Games is scheduled to begin on July 27 and end on August 12.

     

    He also said that their first meet will be on Sunday, January 15 in Sandy Point and it is a development meet for the Charles E. Mills Secondary School.
