St. Kitts-Nevis Information Service
Basseterre, St. Kitts (09th January, 2004): A greater number of Government Employees can soon look forward to connecting to the Internet to carry out research which will enhance the work experience and increase productivity.

Acting Director of Telecommunications and Technology Wesley Wharton said this is just one of the goals of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC).

According to Mr Wharton the plan to replace dial up Internet Connections with Broadband will have a number of immediate benefits. These will include higher connection speeds, greater access for all as well as lower connection costs to government.

He explained that with broadband connections, hundreds of persons can connect to the Internet at the same time for one low monthly cost whereas the present system calls for separate dial up connections for each individual with costs associated with each connection.

He said this would result in big savings to the national treasury.

The director said as with all such advancements there would be abuses but every effort would be made to curtail such possibilities of abuse from the outset.

The NTRC which falls under the ambit of the Ministry of Telecommunications and technology has the responsibility of managing National Telecommunications Resources.

Mr. Wharton explained that on a day to day basis the NTRC is in contact with the main telecommunications provider Cable and Wireless and with other hopeful providers.

The NTRC is also seeking to upgrade the level of computer skills within the civil service as well as to improve the phone system within the service to make it more user friendly and economical for internal and external users.

Updates on trade liberalization issues will be forthcoming from the department in the near future.
