    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, January 17th, 2012 – The public is invited to a consultation meeting to discuss the existing Virgin Islands-United Kingdom relationship this Wednesday at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall at 7pm.

    The objectives of the discussions are to gather public opinion on the relationship, which will be submitted to the UK for consideration in shaping the new White Paper. Questions to be posed include:

     

    1. What are the main challenges facing your Territory?
    2. What are the most important areas of cooperation between your Territory and the UK?

     

    3. In what areas would you like to see greater engagement and interaction between the UK and your Territory?
    4. How can the UK and your Territory strengthen cooperation and build more effective partnerships?

     

    5. How do you assess the quality of good governance, public financial management and economic planning in your Territory?
    6. What are the priorities for improvement? How can the UK best work with your Territory to strengthen these areas?

     

    7. What do you think of the quality and range of external support (i.e. support other than from the UK) available to the Territory, including from regional bodies, the Commonwealth, and the European Union?
    8. What can the UK best do to help Territories access external support?

     

    9. What potential do you see for increased cooperation and partnership between Territories?
    10. In which areas does the Territory provide support to other Territories? How might this be expanded?

     

    11. How does the Territory promote its successes?
    12. What more could be done to raise Territories’ profile internationally? How can the UK best support this?

    The White Paper, introduced in 1999, informs the relationship between the UK and its Overseas Territories. The ten-year agreement expired in 2009.
