    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, January 18th, 2012 – The Ministry of Education and Culture, the Department of Culture and the Adhoc Committee on Territorial Dress and Song are informing the public that interested persons can begin to submit entries for the Territorial Dress and Song Competition from Wednesday, February 1.

    Persons interested in submitting entries for the Territorial Dress Competition are asked to follow the following guidelines as prescribed by the committee.

     

    The colours to be represented in the Territorial Dress are: • Red - feisty Virgin Islander’s nature
    • White – beaches
    • Blue – Caribbean Sea
    • Green – verdant hills
    • Yellow - rising sun

     

    Submissions in drawings may have samples appended. The submissions should include the following items:
    • A head tie

     

    Female Attire
    • A skirt patterned with segments of our culture
    • A blouse
    • A petticoat
    • A shirt

     

    Male Attire
    • A sash
    • Pants ( these can be black or white)
    • Shoes can be black or white for both men and women.

     

    Other
    The skirt should have a cultural image or images which can include and may not be limited to:
    1. Virgin Islands sloops
    2. Picture of someone plaiting straw
    3. Scratch bands
    4. Any other cultural image

     

    Additionally, the background of the shirt should be a colour that will highlight the cultural images.

     

    Participants of the Territorial Song Competition should adhere to the following: Lyrics or words to reflect BVI Heritage and Culture (with or without music) and it should be two or three verses in length.

     

    All submissions should include the name of the applicant, gender, age and contact information. Deadline for submission for both Territorial Dress and Song entries is Friday, March 30, 2012.

     

    Submit entries to the Department of Culture, 2nd Floor Ward’s Building in Road Town between 9:00 am and 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday in a sealed envelope marked Confidential. For more information contact the Department of Culture at 468-4373.

     

    Following the collection of entries, the submissions will be judged by two committees comprised of persons versed in music, and dressmaking and fashion design, respectively.

     

    Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn announced the competition last year and formed the ad-hoc committee which is spearheaded by former Culture Minister, Ms. Eileene L. Parsons.

     

    The development of a Territorial song and dress is in keeping with Government’s commitment to preserve, enhance and promote the Virgin Islands cultural identity.
