BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OVER 60 students received medals and trophies on Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at a flag raising and presentation ceremony at the Saddlers Secondary School grounds to commence the 2012 sports calendar.

The three houses of the school, Blue, Red and Green marched through the streets of Saddlers at 1:30 p.m. before arriving at the school grounds where the flag raising and presentation ceremony was held.

Present was Minister of Education, Hon. Nigel Carty, Education Officer Lisa Pistana, National Carnival Queen Kalia Huggins and St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletics Association’s PRO Evris Huggins who also gave the address.

According to Principal of the school Adina Richards, the school held their first official sports meet where their athletes shone and would now be rewarded.

“When the book is written about Saddlers Secondary School, one will read about Xiaoyu Harris, Audraine Mills, our first Victrix and Victor Lodorum respectively and Blue House - the first house to win a Sports Meet at Saddlers Secondary School,” she said.

The school also took part in their first Interschool Championship last year and received their first Bronze medal, in the area of Long Jump won by Xiaoyu Harris, and their first Gold Medal in the area of Shot Put and as a result Tarren Tweede was chosen to represent St. Kitts in the Leeward Islands Championship last year.

“Tarren not only made Saddlers Secondary proud but also St. Kitts when she walked away with the gold medal,” said Richards.

Evris Huggins, in his address, said he wanted to charge the school to take the energy and excitement they have displayed  to their Sports Day on March 9 and also to the Interschool Championship from 23-25 of March.

He said that he thinks the powerful words of the theme ‘Ready, Steady Saddlers Secondary-Respect All, Fear None’ are appropriate for the school and their sporting encounters.

“Saddlers Secondary School may be the smallest school and people see strength in numbers but not because you are small, once you are united, once you practice and put your best foot forward, you are going to be able to achieve,” he said.

He also told them to not give up, to push forward, work hard, and follow instructions from their teachers and coaches and to understand that there is a relationship between sports and education for in education, there is opportunity for scholarships.

A total of 66 students and athletes received trophies from their 2011 Sports Day which was made possible by the kind sponsorship and assistance of Steve LaPlace of Carib Brewries, Caroline Mienze from Sugars and Maxine Isaiah.

Gratitude was also expressed to the school’s coach James Pemberton for assisting with the training of the students.

The School’s Sports Calendar also includes a Walk-A-Thon on February 10 and the Clash of the Houses on March 7.
