BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN just a matter of approximately 48 hours, excellent policing by members of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has led to the successful arrest and subsequent charge of a young man for attempting to murder Shakeem ‘Hotness’ Walters.
Charged with attempted murder is Nyon Dasent of Wellington Road, Basseterre.
According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sergeant Stephen Hector, police had formally arrested the 21-year-old on Friday (Jan. 20) and subsequently charged him on Sunday (Jan. 22).
In commending the public on behalf of the Commissioner and ranks of the force, the PRO said, “We are thankful for the support of the public and do look forward to your continued support as we continue to take back the streets of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Shortly after midnight on Friday (Jan. 20), Dasent allegedly shot Walters in Park Street, Basseterre in the vicinity of National Housing Corporation (NHC).
According to reports, the 16-year-old was found lying on Park Street in a pool of blood with gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
When SKNVibes visited the crime scene on the morning of the incident, one of the officers said that “no stone will be left unturned in this shooting incident”.
Yesterday (Jan. 22), SKNVibes learned that Walters was still in a critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at the JNF General Hospital.
Well-placed sources told this media house that one of the two bullets had damaged Walters’ spine and “he is paralysed from the waist down”.
Sources also said that “his eyes are swollen shut and an ophthalmologist is scheduled to conduct an examination on his eyes”. This particular information was confirmed yesterday by his mother, Shermine Walters, when she spoke to a journalist from SKNVibes on the day.
His mother also said that he has not lost his sense of speech, but "he cannot do so fluently".
