Press Release

St. John's Antigua, January 26th, 2012  --  Recycling has become a buzz-word again in schools across Antigua. The Antigua and Barbuda Waste Recycling Corporation (ABWREC), in collaboration with the Environment Division, has launched its Inter-Schools Recycling Competition 2012 for the period January 9th to May 22nd 2012.

Environment Education Officer Arica Hill was excited about the beginning of this activity. “The school year2009/ 2010 saw some real competitiveness between the schools.

Some schools got their communities involved and were able to collect several thousands of pounds of recyclable material. Truly amazing feats considering that they were just bottles!”

ABWREC is encouraging all the schools to actively participate in this competition by collecting a wide range of materials. Participating schools are asked to be very careful in their collection of recyclables by doing the following:

    - Ensure that bottles have no liquids

    - Separate the bottles from the caps and place in separate bags

    - Clean all tins (sardines, tuna, and so on)

    - Label the bags with the school name

Devon Ferris of ABRWREC has committed to add a bonus of 10lbs to each school that separates their bottle caps and places them in separate bags.

In 2010 Golden Grove claimed the prize o $1,000 for collecting 3,973 pounds of recyclables. The 37 schools that participated in the competition collected a total of 21,822 pounds. This is a significant amount of waste that would otherwise have ended up in the Cooks Sanitary Landfill.

The competition has already begun and will end on the International Day of Biological Diversity May 22nd.

    Recyclables:
