BASSETERRE, St. Kitts  –  A man who had been released from prison after serving some time there in January 2011, was up to his old tricks when he committed building breaking and larceny in Frigate Bay on July 26, 2011.

Kervin Bergan of West Farm Housing Project, pleaded guilty to breaking into the business place of Vernon Nias who owns Inons Bar on the Frigate Bay Strip.

At his sentencing yesterday, Feb. 2, Bergan was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for his crime after he was given a third reduction due to his guilty plea.

On July 26, at 2:00 a.m. Nias secured his business and left the bar. When he returned later in the morning he noticed the lock was broken and that several cases of liquor including one case of Black Label, one case of Beehive, one case of Ponche Kuba, one case of red wine and one case of Blunt, totaling to the value of EC$685 were missing along with a yellow container with coins.

He then made a report to the Frigate Bay Police Station.

Bergan was later found by police with some of the missing items including the yellow container.

According to his ‘Social inquiry’ which was prepared by Probation Officer Wingrove George, it was revealed that Bergan started his life of crime from 2006 and has since been convicted for six crimes of similar nature to larceny.

His parents also stated that they have tried their best with him but he seemed to listen to his friends more.

His father stated: “If Kervin would only stop following bad company he will be a much better person.”

The report also stated that if Bergan does not see it fit to change then he will be on his way to being a dangerous criminal and our society needs to be protected and defended from people like him who have no intentions of earning an honest living.

His Lordship told him that while he is away serving time he should take time to assess his situation.

“Tell yourself, ‘I’m still young and can do better’. Go up there and form an association; you all have the potential, prison is no place for you,” he said.

In another case, the sentencing of Elvis Bradshaw was postponed due to the incompletion of his Social Inquiry.
