Health Ministry and Seventh Day Adventists team up with United Hands

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, MAY 23RD 2008 (CUOPM) – Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Elvis Newton has confirmed that United Hands, Inc., a 40-member U.S.-based team of health professionals will be conducting free health screenings for the general public in St. Kitts and Nevis in July.
Mr. Newton said the Ministry was collaborating with the Seventh Day Adventist Church for the visit to take place from July 28 to 31, 2008.
“The focus of our health screening will be on prevention” Dr. Don Bovell told the South Florida Caribbean News. Bovell is an emergency medicine physician in Central Florida, who serves as the medical director of United Hands.
The screening tests offered include vision evaluation and free glasses, blood pressure checks, glucose and cholesterol screenings, dental evaluation and treatment, health, nutrition and weight loss counseling and medical exam by physicians and other healthcare practitioners.
United Hands is an all-volunteer group that makes “mission trips” on an annual basis. Many of the team members are Caribbean nationals, including Dr. Don Bovell (Guyana), Dr. David Williams (St. Lucia), Ann Burnett (Jamaica), Wayne & Olga Hamilton (Jamaica). In prior years the group has traveled to Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, South Africa and Ghana. Each member of the group covers their own expenses for the trip.
