Minister Pickering joins in youth employment initiative

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 9th, 2012  – Youth employment continues to be critically important to the Government of the Virgin Islands; as such Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering joined Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron Walwyn this morning at the opening ceremony of the Job and Career Fair.

    The job and career fair is part of the education ministry’s Youth Unemployment Register (YUR) initiative aimed at addressing unemployment through promoting self-improvement and self-empowerment of the youth.

     

    In his remarks during the opening ceremony Honourable Pickering said, “I stand with the Minister for Education and Culture on this journey to ensure that all who are serious about their future and have a vision but need someone to help make it a reality because I see endless possibilities for the youth of this Territory.” Honourable Pickering assured the youth that his ministry through the Labour Department is working diligently to set up an employment division to assist individuals who are seeking employment.

     

    Minister Pickering said the responsibilities of this division will include sourcing the job market, ensuring that the message is publicised to those in search for employment and making sure that job opportunities are put on the market in a way to encourage others to notice if they meet the criteria. “I encourage the young people to stay focus and be determined as we will work diligently on our end to ensure that whatever needs to be done will be done so that all may find a meaningful job,” Minister Pickering expressed.

     

    Other speakers included Premier Dr. the Hon. D. Orlando Smith, Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn, Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Ministry of Education and Culture Ag. Permanent Secretary Dr. Marcia Potter, Co-Facilitator Mrs. Judith Vanterpool, BCQS Representative Mr. Denny Hodge, and Respondent on behalf of Registrants Ms. Hakeema Matthew.

     

    The Government of the Virgin Islands is committed to enhancing the quality of life of the youth by making sure they are equipped with the necessary skills or experiences to obtain many available positions being offered. Government is opening the door to opportunities that allow youth to determine their own destiny.
