BASSETERRE, St. Kitts:  THE RBTT Young Leaders Programme held a ceremony at the Verchilds High School earlier today to award winners and participants of the ‘My Young Leaders Project’ for 2008.

Six High Schools from across the federation participated in the program this year, creating projects under the theme ‘Bridging the Gap Building Relationships for a Better Tomorrow’.

The ceremony was held at the winning school, Verchilds High under the auspices of the Young Leaders Coordinator, Violet Clark, RBTT’s Country Manager Corliss Charles/Sutton, one of the judges for the programme Morrice Tyrell and Chief Education Officer Patrick Welcome.

Verchilds High School received EC$5000 for their first place position while the Lyn Jeffers School (Nevis) placed second and received EC$3000.  Out of six participating schools, only three were able to meet the project deadline.

Sutton addressed the students first and encouraged all of them to be young leaders as “it is a learning experience for all”.

“The young leaders programme always addresses current matters that influence young people and I am encouraging stake holders to provide proper guidance for the students. ~~Adz:Right~~

Tyrell who spoke on behalf of the judges said the participants were rated in order of their quality of work but they were disappointed that the projects did not meet the normally high standards.

“There seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm this year and there must be a reason for this low level of participation. However, the judges were quite impressed with the quality of research done by the winning school bearing in mind the age of the students”.

The Chief Education Officer offered his congratulatory words saying, “As I look at the theme I think there is no better way of stimulating the young people in this federation. I believe that young leaders are on the ball and they are organising themselves for the future. Those who didn’t take part missed out on the opportunity to make an impact.”

The Verchilds High project was based on building a relationship with Special Education students and the learning about the different ways they communicate.

There was also a special award for Most Outstanding Young Leader which was presented to Myron Alexander Lake.
