BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Another young Kittitian has made himself, family and country proud in the academic arena with his recent appointment as Chairman of the Chancellor Hall at the University of the West Indies [UWI].

He is 26-year-old Calvin Mason of Saddlers Village who is currently pursuing a degree in Banking and Finance at the UWI, Mona, Jamaica.

Mason, who was nurtured under a single-parent [maternal] roof with his five siblings, started on his educational career at Saddlers Primary School, and from 1995 to 1999 attended Cayon High School before moving on as a TDC’s Scholarship Student to the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College [CFBC], from where he graduated in 2001.

Mason always had his eyes set on academic excellence and from an early age he had demonstrated good leadership qualities at school and also within the Saddlers’ community. Those who have followed this young man’s path to academic success claim that he is an excellent role model not only to his siblings, but also to all aspiring youths in the community from which he came as well as all those with whom he interacts.

After successfully completing his studies at the CFBC, Mason was employed as a Cashier at the National Caribbean Insurance Company and later at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort as a Sales Representative.
With his ever-increasing lust for knowledge and with encouragement from his mother and others close to him, he opted for higher education at the UWI in 2005.

At the UWI Mason’s leadership qualities grew to such extent that he was actively involved in a number of student activities and groups. He was a member of the University’s Quality Leadership group in the UWI/Costa Rica Exchange Programme and had attended certified Leadership Seminars of “Building Better Leaders.   ~~Adz:Right~~

From 2006 to 2007 Mason was appointed Chairperson of Cultural Entertainment Affairs for Block C Hall and also the Representative for Block C Chancellor Hall in 2007-2008. During this same period [2007-2008] he was Vice President of the St. Kitts-Nevis Student Association in Jamaica.

With his impeccable leadership style and herculean efforts in representing the offices he held, the Kittitian scholar gained the respect of both the University’s administration and student’s population and was elevated to the prestigious position of Hall Chairman for the Chancellor Hall in 2008 and is scheduled to serve in this capacity until next year.

According to information gleaned from the UWI, the Chancellor Hall has provided the region with leaders at the highest levels. It has been and still is the last bastion of complete male dominance within the Anglophone Caribbean and Chancellorites have exhibited a solid representation of how men destined for leadership of the region should be groomed.

Regional leaders who held this prestigious are former Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. the Rt. Hon. Sir Kennedy A. Simmonds, former Prime Minister of Jamaica P.J Patterson, Prime Minister of Jamaica the Hon Orette Bruce Golding, Jamaica’s Governor General His Excellency the Most Hon. Professor Sir Kenneth Octavius Hall, Prime Minister of St. Lucia Dr. the Hon. Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines the Hon. Ralph Gonzales, and former Prime Minister the Hon. Owen Arthur of Barbados, as well as many more outstanding and prominent citizens within the Caribbean.

Mason told SKNVibes that his ultimate goal is to make a significant contribution to the economic development of the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis by first “pursuing academic excellence, leadership skills and to gain as much as possible in terms of personal development from my experience at UWI, Chancellor Hall, Jamaica”.

The management and staff of SKNVibes join with the many relatives, friends and associates of Calvin Mason in congratulating him on his past and current leadership appointments and success in his future academic endeavours.
