Press Release

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, February 13th, 2012 – In an effort to safeguard and build a sustainable financial services industry, the Government of the Virgin Islands, through the British Virgin Islands International Finance Centre (IFC) is reaching out to students at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) to generate interest in the Industry.

Tomorrow, February 14, students interested in the financial services industry, or those requiring more information, as they plan their future, will get an opportunity to learn about the sector during a Career Expo at the ESHS.

According to Marketing Manager with the IFC, Mrs. Alicia Green, they are pleased once again to team up with ESHS to host the expo which will be held under the theme: “Pursuing Purposeful & Profitable Productivity: Transferable Skills…The Road to Survival”.

The all day exhibition is tailored to expose third, fourth and fifth form students to career choices in the financial services industry which also lends an opportunity to educate students on the various sector services.

Mrs. Green said that the IFC is hopeful that with the increased awareness of financial services, more students will want to pursue careers in the industry.

She explained, “Based on feedback from students and the wider public, these types of events do aid in not only increasing awareness to the industry but encourages interested persons on opportunities available. Providing this exposure to the students on a regular basis helps to encourage and sets expectation for choosing a career path to work in our major sectors. This gives the IFC hope that our education initiatives are effective.”

As usual, students attending the expo will meet representatives from a variety of companies and organisations including the Financial Services Commission, Financial Investigation Agency, BVI Bar Association, BVI Association of Professional Accountants, BVI Bank Association, BVI Investment Fund Association, Recovery & Insolvency Specialist Association, Association of Registered Agents, Society of Trust and Estate Planning and the VI Shipping Registry.

This year’s exhibition also includes exhibits by the BVI Airport Authority and domestic insurance companies.

Mrs. Green further explained, “The addition of these entities contribute to our overall career education programme. They are related areas within the industry where career opportunities currently exist and are in demand on a more immediate basis for the graduating seniors.”

She added, “It is within this light that we have requested exhibitors to share any job opportunities with the graduating seniors in the event there are immediate opportunities when they graduate in the next few months.”

The Financial Services Career Expo is a part of the IFC’s student education programme, which supports their mission to lend a voice for the financial services industry at home and abroad.
