Senior Managers Board called upon to make implementation a priority in 2012

    ST. GEORGE Grenada, February 15th, 2012 -- Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has called on the Senior Managers Board (SMB) to place increased attention on implementation of government projects, while expressing appreciation to the SMB for providing “vital public services” in the face of an economically challenging year.

     

    The Prime Minister, in addressing the SMB this morning called for a professional public service that is accountable for its actions and performance, in keeping with the vision adopted in May, 2010. 

     

    He emphasized the need to increase implementation of agreed projects and programmes, especially those geared at job creation.

     

    “Implementation is a weak area of the Public Service and I hope we can reverse that trend in 2012. As Senior Managers you have a leadership role to play in the country in shaping, formulating and creating public policy,  I urge you to take that role seriously”, the Prime Minister said.

     

    Hon. Tillman Thomas, who is also responsible for the public service, also listed a number of areas he wanted to see improvement in 2012, including containment of the wage bill and recurrent expenditure, waste reduction, productivity in the service, management of staff, work ethics and customer service.

     

    Additionally the Prime Minister called on the SMB to make “recommendations speedily” on pension and pension reform, so that the government can have some direction “by the end of the first half of this year.”

     

    On the issue of salary negotiations for public officers, the Grenadian leader told the Board, he hopes that the government and the Unions can come to an agreement by the end of June, 2012.
