BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - CHADDIN BUCHANAN who was convicted of robbery by a jury and given seven years in October in 2011, was given more time after he pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding recently.
He was given a sentence of three years and four months that will run consecutively with his present sentence.
One third of his intended sentence of five years was deducted by His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas because of his guilty plea.
Originally, Buchanan and his brother Kassim Buchanan were jointly charged with wounding with intent and unlawful wounding of Leroy Veira. However, Chaddin pleaded guilty to the lesser charge while his brother maintained his innocence.
According to the prosecution, on Nov. 14, 2009 in Sandy Point Chaddin and his brother attacked and wounded Veira.
Evidence also stated that Chaddin had caused Veira to fall to the ground and when there he began kicking and stomping him in his face.
The kicking and stomping was said to have lasted 10-13 minutes.
When asked if he had anything to say before he was sentenced, Buchanan told the court that he would like to apologize to the victim but he (the victim) was not present in court.
According to his social inquiry prepared by Probation Officer Wingrove George, Chaddin needs to take stock of his life and to do some soul searching.
“He needs to be fixed and fixed now,” the report stated.
A letter from the high school Chaddin attended was also a part of the social inquiry report which said that he attended his secondary school from 2000-2004 and while there displayed inappropriate behavior and was disrespectful to staff and students.
“Always been a person disrespectful and always giving trouble. Nothing in this report shows that you are the way you are because of something happened to you,” His Lordship said before sentencing him.
