KINGSTOWN St.Vincent,  February 17th, 2012  --  Several local business operators convened at the NIS Training room on Monday for a National Consultation on Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Development.

This consultation was facilitated by the Caricom Secretariat, the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines and the Ministry of Trade.

In his address, Economist in the Ministry of Tourism and Industry Ellison Clarke said it is important that the region develop a policy framework for SMEs.

Meanwhile, a Draft Strategic Plan and a Harmonized Model Bill for Small and Medium Enterprises were presented to local business operators.

Private Sector Facilitator at the Caricom Secretariat Leela Ramou-tar said the draft strategic plan was developed five years ago by Caricom member states.

Mrs. Ramoutar said the Draft Model Bill, the SME Development Act, was completed in 2008.  And she noted that more work is needed to address the issue of competitiveness.
