Sandy Point Agriculture celebrates two years of growth!

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TWO years ago on January 10th a group of young farmers from the Farms Estate area of Sandy Point formed the Sandy Point Agricultural Co-operative Society Ltd (SPACS) in an effort to bring healthy locally produced goods to the people of St. Kitts.

     

    In celebration of these two years, the members of SPACS will be having a week of activities, in keeping with their aim of bringing fun and excitement to agriculture.

     

    The activities will run from February 27 until March 3.

     

    The 27th and 28th will feature 'School Talks' when the members of SPACS will be making appearances at both the Sandy Point Primary School and the Charles E. Mills Secondary School to promote SPACS and agriculture and also speak to the students on a number of topics.

     

    Topics include the importance and benefits of being actively involved in agriculture and the importance and benefits of teamwork.

     

    On the afternoon of the 28th, SPACS will officially be taking on the agricultural responsibilities of the Sandy Point Community Centre. The members will be planting trees and handling its ground maintenance.

     

    All are invited to a Town Hall meeting on the 29th that will be held at the Sandy Point Community Centre. SPACS members wish to be discuss several topics such as opportunities in agriculture, the importance of a farming zone in the community, the benefits of joining a Cooperative, linkages between tourism and agriculture and financing for farmers.

     

    SPACS' members expect to be hitting the radio stations on March 1 to have discussions on some of the aforementioned topics.

     

    On March 2, SPACS will be sponsoring not one but two raffles commemorating their two years of service to the community.

     

    The raffles coincide with their monthly raffle draw. Persons, who purchased five ‘provisions’ at the Sandy Point Market during the month of January, had their name entered into the raffle. The winner will receive an EC$50 grocery voucher compliments SPACS.

     

    On Saturday (Feb. 18) SPACS in collaboration with Hillery and Belle's Catering held a post Valentine's Food Fair Extravaganza at the Sandy Point Market from 11:00 a.m. until.

     

    Different caterers sold a variety of dishes from rabbit stew to pork to itals. All dishes were prepared using local produce. Bouncing castles were on hand for the children's entertainment.

     

    The Sandy Point Market is opened every Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. offering a wide variety of local produce and agro-processed goods such as pumpkins, green bananas, dasheens, tanyas, sweet and season peppers, tomatoes, herbs and thymes among others, as well as ‘Itals’ – usually available from midday.
