BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –TRAGEDY visited the Johnson family last evening (Feb. 19) when their toddler daughter died following a traffic accident along the Kim Collins Highway.

According to a communiqué issued by the Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the incident occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. and involved two motor cars - PA1436, driven by Kimo Liburd of Lodge Project and P1714, driven by Boris Johnson of Parray’s Village.

The latter vehicle, according to the Traffic Department, also contained Alexia Johnson, Boris’ wife, and their daughter Jania Johnson.

The press release informed that “investigations revealed that PA1436 was travelling towards the airport when it collided with P1714 which was travelling in the opposite direction…Both drivers sustained lacerations and bruises about their bodies as well as the front seat passenger (Alexia)…”

Other details remain sketchy but SKNVibes understands that because of the severity of the incident there may have been some difficulty in removing one or more of the victims from the wreckage. And the assistance of the Fire and Rescue Services Department had to be solicited in that regard.

All victims, including Joniah, were rushed to the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

The toddler reportedly sustained injuries to her head and stomach as a result of the crash and, after a near three-hour struggle, she lost the battle for her life.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and the Traffic Department has begun its investigations into the incident.

Jania’s registers the first road fatality to take place in the Federation for 2012 and, according to the Traffic press release, an autopsy would be performed to determine the exact cause of her death.

It is not clear at this time whether charges will be brought against anyone in relation to this matter; however, inquiries are continuing.
