Man gets five years for chopping off finger

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -  ELVIS BRADSHAW told the court that he was a man that liked to work hard, so His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas told him at his sentencing that he will be able to work hard again…on Cayon Street.

Bradshaw was found guilty of wounding with intent his employer Daren Hendrickson on February 9, 2011, after Hendrickson confronted him about some censor lights.

An altercation occurred where Hendrickson’s finger was chopped off by the hands of Bradshaw who had a machete in his vehicle.

At his sentencing on Thursday, Feb. 16, Bradshaw asked Justice Thomas for leniency.

“Since I been in prison I been sleeping on the floor, I been thinking about my child, home and work and I’m a hard working man,” he said.

His social inquiry report was prepared by Probation Officer Gerald Connor, and stated that Bradshaw grew up in a large family with good character and known for their hard work.
Before passing down his judgment, Justice Thomas said that neither party was innocent in the matter.

He said that the victim should have followed the procedure and made a report instead of taking things into his own hands.

“However, the victim was right to inquire about the box of lights,” Judge Thomas said.

He told the court that the victim’s fingers were damaged and that one was amputated.

“What concerns the court is not only the damage you did, but the fact that you had a sharpened machete in your vehicle. You will spend five years in prison.

“The machete was to either kill or inflict serious damage on another; I want you to understand clearly that the fact that you had a machete in your vehicle and that you cut off the victim’s finger is the reason for this sentencing. Now you can find hard work to do on Cayon Street,” he said.
