BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE committee responsible for Nevis’ Culturama festival is well ahead of the game this year, with the recent release of the list of activities for the 2012 edition of the celebration.
The calendar of events was released to the media earlier this month and outlines activities which are slated to begin in early July and scheduled to end in mid-August.
Chairman of the Nevis Culturama Festival Committee Antonio ‘Abonaty’ Liburd noted that the early release of the calendar of events is not uncommon but further explained that it was done this year in response to requests from Nevisians living in the Diaspora.
“We’ve had the request from persons, Nevisians living within the Diaspora, to publish the calendar of activities early so that they can reserve their vacation in order to attend Culturama this year. This is not uncommon to release the calendar of activities; we have done it in the past.
“This year, however, we decided to give people an opportunity to know the dates and know the events that are going to be taking place for Culturama this year. So we have the early publication of the calendar of activities in order that Nevisians living overseas can be aware of the dates so they can plan to be here for Culturama 2012.”
This year’s celebration marks the 38th anniversary of the Festival and included on the list of activities are the traditional Senior Calypso Competition, Ms. Culture Swimwear and Mr. Kool Contests, Culturama Cultural Food Fair, Emancipation Celebration, Culturama Cultural Food Fair, Emancipation J’Ouvert Jump Up, King of de Jungle Band Clash and the revived Soca Monarch Competition.
Each year the slogan for the celebration is selected from a pool submitted by the public as part of the Culturama Slogan competition which runs from the first week in January to about mid-March.
This year, as explained by Liburd, the slogan for the Culturama 2012 Festival would be announced by the beginning of April.
