Saint Lucia Assured of Argentina’s Continued Support

    CASTRIES St. Lucia, February 16th, 2012 – Saint Lucia and Argentina are expected to benefit from closer collaboration with the appointment of a new Argentine Ambassador Designate to the island.

     

    His Excellency Mr. Marcelo Aldo Salviolo presented his Letters of Credence to Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy on Thursday February 16th, 2012.

     

    The new Ambassador says Argentina is hoping to explore areas for mutual corporation with Saint Lucia.

     

    “Argentina has a strong political commitment to strengthen ties with Saint Lucia and from there with all CARICOM countries. The Argentine Police support to the Caribbean has been consistent for several decades, as we are all live together in a world confronted with new challenges.

     

    Among other issues we should unite our efforts and strengths towards multilateralism, the war against terrorism and drug trafficking and money laundering.  Furthermore unity among our people will ensure the defence of democratic institutions, defence of human right and sustainable growth in the hemisphere”.

     

    Argentina was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia after the country attained independence in 1979.

     

    The island`s Governor General expressed optimism that the appointment of the new Ambassador will lead to a new era in the historical relationship between Saint Lucia and its Spanish speaking alley.

     

    “During the past decade, technical cooperation between Saint Lucia and Argentina has been fairly active, with Saint Lucia benefiting from programmes provided by the Argentine fund for Horizontal Co-operation which your government set up for the purpose of sharing knowledge, skills and experience with developing countries. In this regard we have collaborated in the area of education, particularly language training and in the agriculture sector.

     

    Your Excellency referred to Argentina`s transfer of technology in several fields and its strong political commitment to strengthening ties with Saint Lucia and the wider Caribbean. We are indeed heartened by that reassurance and we look forward to exploring with you the many initiatives, both great and small by which we can consolidate our partnership to promote greater co-operation not only between ourselves but among the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean”.

     

    Saint Lucia`s Prime Minister Honourable Dr Kenny Anthony has been a guest of the Government of Argentina having travelled to that country on an official visit - April 24th – 26th, 2001.

     

    The two countries established diplomatic relations some twenty seven years ago.
