BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – VERNLYN ZAKERS, who was convicted of “possession of ammunition”, “possession of firearms”, “importation of firearms” and “importation of ammunition” and was given 26 years imprisonment, is appealing against her conviction in the 2008 crime at the upcoming sitting of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal will sit at the Basseterre High Court from March 12-16.

The young lady of Newton Ground was convicted for the gun related offenses on July 22, 2009, after the prosecution successfully proved that on June 12, 2008 Zakers went to the Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport to clear three packages that contained two bicycles and an inflatable pool.

The packages also included six firearms and 400 rounds of assorted ammunition.

At the time of her sentencing the mother of two was at the age of 22, and was represented by Dr. Henry Browne.

It was reported that the jury heard evidence from 11 prosecution witnesses and also from Zakers, and that the jury after just 10 minutes shy of two hours had returned with an unanimous verdict on all four counts.
