Young woman’s home, possessions destroyed by fire

    Makes plea for assistance

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AT the end of each day most of us would retire to the comfort of our homes and seek rest for the upcoming day in our inviting beds, under roofs that protect us from the elements.

Not so for 33-year-old Tracy Mulraine however, who lost all her worldly possessions by fire which took place during the wee hours of Sunday (Feb. 19).

It was about 2:00 a.m. while the young woman was asleep at her Halfway Tree home when the unexpected transpired.

“I was in the house sleeping…It was like the spirit of the Father came into my sleep and then I felt like I wanted to urinate. I jumped up out of my sleep (and saw that) to the back of my house was blazing with fire. All by my bed was blazing.”

A now homeless Mulraine told this publication that after she realised the one-room board structure - which sits on the seaside of the road - was ablaze, she quickly exited through the  front door and sought help from her relative who resides in a house just opposite, on the mountain side of the road.

“The only thing I could have done was just rush out…I didn’t get any clothes, nothing was saved. Everything was burnt flat. All I got to do was rush out of the house. When I rushed out, I called my cousin Anesta and I told her my house was on fire.

“I said Nes, Nes, somebody light me house ah fire. When she came out, I saw the flames blazing up and she told me I am lucky that the Father came in my mind and jump me out of my sleep.”

Mulraine’s relatives alerted the Sandy Point Branch of the Fire and Rescue Services Department which dispatched a unit to the scene. Despite their efforts however, the house was burnt to the ground and all its contents totally destroyed.

The Sandy Point Branch, when contacted by this publication, confirmed that the incident had taken place and noted that investigations were being made.

Items which the young woman said she lost in the fire include a television, a fan, a stove and a bed.

Cognisant that she could have lost her life in the fire, Mulraine said, “I just give God thanks and praise. Even though I lost every-single thing, I am still giving God thanks because my life was spared.”

A landscaper by trade, Mulraine now does not have a permanent resting place but has since been seeking assistance from her friends. On Sunday evening she slept by one friend and by Monday evening she was at another friend’s home.

She says she is making an attempt to pick up the pieces of her life but admits she is in need of help.

“I am trying to talk to people to get a little help from them. I have nothing at all, no clothes, nothing. Everything has gone! Someone gave me a suit of clothes to put on and that is all I have…I spoke with the Red Cross and they gave me a kit with some toiletries. I have nowhere to stay right now. I am also looking for somewhere to stay.”

She lived at the rented residence for close to two years and while she searches for another place to stay, she is pleading with the public for assistance in answering her dilemma.

When asked what type of assistance she is seeking, a somewhat saddened Mulraine replied, “Anyway people can help me, I would accept.”

The young woman told SKNVibes she would also be seeking to speak with her Parliamentary Representative, the Hon. Glen Phillip in relation to her situation.

Persons wishing to provide assistance to Mulraine are asked to contact SKNVibes via telephone (869) 466-9242 or via email editor@sknvibes.com.
