BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – STUDENTS of the St. Joseph’s Roman School participated in an elocution competition yesterday that highlighted some of the school’s most eloquent speakers.
Parents gathered at the Co-Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at East Independence Square Street to see students of Kindergarten through sixth grade perform poems by emoting and projecting their small voices.
At the evening’s end a winner from each peer group was chosen from amongst three competitors from the individual classes.
The winners were: Kindergarten 1-Zuwena Herbert, Kindergarten 2-Taina French, Gr 1-Berenique Brudy, Gr 2-Kimani Kelly, Gr 3–Tyra Henry, Gr 4-Janika Mardenborough, Gr 5-Deger Gumbs, Gr 6-Trevis Belle.
Each of the winners received trophies and all the participants received certificates for their invaluable contributions to the success of the event.
One of the teachers explained that the students were judged in Infant and Juniors categories and that the judges “listened for things like intonation, clarity” and paid attention to the “performers’ use of exclamation, body language and eye contact”.
The poems chosen for the oration were ‘Just me’, ‘Little Rabbit’, ‘Perfectly Me’, ‘The Flattered Flying Fish’, ’The Beggar My Brother’, ‘My Caribbean Cruise’ and ‘The End of the World’. The students were assisted by their individual class teachers over the past few weeks, learning the literary pieces and practicing the accompanying gestures.
