Police to get overseas training in Rape & Indecent Assault cases

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE are investigating reports of the molestation of a two-year-old girl and Commissioner of Police Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn is seeking the assistance of foreign agencies to train members of the force in cases involving special victims, especially in the areas of rape and indecent assault.

A press release from the Police Public Relations Office states, “Officers of the Criminal Investigation Department within the Federation are paying special attention to cases involving special victims. The Commissioner of Police has commenced formal discussions with overseas agencies to assist with training in these areas with a focus on victims of Rape and Indecent Assault.”

It also states that the force is experiencing too many incidences of indecent assault cases, especially those of which involve victims and minors.

“The Commissioner of Police frowns on social ills of this nature and calls upon the social services and Non-Governmental Organisations for their support in the stance against such ills.

“The Commissioner of Police is seeking the support of the general public at this time especially taken into account that as recent as this week reports have been filled with our institution of a two year old (2) female child being molested,” the release added.

In recent times, there have been many cases of rape and indecent assaults perpetrated against females under the age of 16 years.

Some of these cases were tried and the offenders were sentenced to serve periods of imprisonment. However, many of them go unreported and some of the young victims ended up as child-parents.

Further, it is alleged that one of the reasons why some rape cases go unreported, especially those involving underage girls, is because the victims, their parents or guardians were offered financial bribes.
