BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 10TH 2004) – Issues ranging from the role of the Department of Labour, abuse of duty-free concessions, the use of government vehicles by civil servants who benefit from travel allowances and housing were among matters raised by residents of Constituency 7.

St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Education and Parliamentary Representative, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, who attended Town Hall Meeting at the Estridge Primary School, also heard concerns raised on matters of education, the lack of police patrols by officers posted at the Tabernacle Police Station, the upgrade of roads, the provision of recreational activities, the frequency of electricity outages and the need for the expansion of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

Prime Minister Douglas said government has plans to make available such services at the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux and the Pogson Hospital in Sandy Point. He said while there are sufficient ambulances, there are not enough trained personnel to provide adequate service required for those two medical facilities.

“Last year the training was not done because the finances were limited. I believe that in this year’s budget provision is now being made to train the additional number of persons to adequately provide the service that would allow us to station ambulances at Pogson and Mary Charles Hospitals that the people would be able to have the best care and attention,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He assured residents of Ottley’s, Lodge Project, Lodge Village, Bourryeau, Phillips’, Christ Church, Mansion, Tabernacle and Belle Vue they will continue to benefit from his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Administration.

Dr. Douglas said the primary schools in the constituency have now been outfitted with computer labs and several projects have been earmarked for the area including the paving of the main road from the round-a-bout through Molineux up to Philips and from Lodge Village to Bourryeaux; the sporting facilities at Mansion and the Edgar Gilbert Playing Field and the daycare centre at Tabernacle.

Prime Minister Douglas called on the residents to seize the numerous opportunities to improve their own livelihood and living conditions.

“We continue to transform this country from the agricultural sugar-based economy to a new vibrant, progressive society with services in finance, tourism and information technology,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who added that in achieving these goals, the support of all in the private sector and civil society including all the residents are vital.

“It is now up to you to make use of the opportunities that are being provided by your Government. It is up to you to be responsible as citizens of this country to do your part and it is for you to be responsible and make sure that you work in partnership with this Government and the Police to arrest some of the social problems that we are experiencing, especially the restlessness of some of our youth,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who appealed to parents to provide the necessary support to their children.
