In an impassioned and heart rendering address to the plenary of the OAS General Assembly Meeting in Medellin, Colombia, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Hon Timothy Harris has called on the thirty-four member hemispheric body to propose “a solution focused action plan informed by reliable data and prioritized for implementation” to address the unprecedented incidence of youth crime and violence in Caribbean societies including St Kitts and Nevis.
Dr. Harris said “we cannot fiddle like the legendary Nero with resolutions and declarations while our cities and communities are ablaze, with homicide rates unimaginable a decade ago, health services burdens by an escalation in purposeful injuries and pervasi feelings of vulnerability and every strata of our communities, becoming increasingly unsure that we are safe from harm”.
Dr. Harris warned that bold steps more than speeches and the implementation of best practices identified by serious research were necessary to redress the challenge of violence and crime to our future. We must act now in the interest of our youths and we must act now in our own self interests” Minister Harris warned.
