Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 2nd, 2012  --  The Nevis Renal (Kidney) Society, a registered non-profit, non-governmental organisation working to assist kidney patients on Nevis is to observe a week of activities aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of kidney diseases and education on how to prevent and/or take care of the disease.

“Our island has over 500 persons, representing 4.2% of the population who suffer from either diabetes or hypertension or both,” noted Mrs Alexa Pemberton, President of the Nevis Renal Society. “Ages for these persons range from the very young to the elderly and statistics show that these two conditions put patients at high risk for kidney failure.”

According to Mrs Pemberton, the week of activities kicks off on Sunday March 4 with a church service at the Eden Brown Church of God at 10 am. Members and their families will be in attendance and she is calling on friends and other well-wishers to join forces with them.

“On Monday March 5, the Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration, the Hon Hensley Daniel will make a radio address to mark the observance of the week,” observed Mrs Pemberton. “The same address will in the evening at 8:00 pm be aired by Nevis Television on Cable Channel 8.”

A panel of presenters will on Tuesday at 8:00 pm be on the Voice of Nevis (VON) Radio’s Let’s Talk programme hosted by veteran radio journalist and manager at VON, Mr Everred ‘Webbo’ Herbert. Accompanying Mrs Pemberton to the studios at VON will be a doctor, a representative from the Health Department, and probably a kidney patient.

Thursday March 8 is the World Kidney Day, and Nevisians will be observing it as well. Dr Bailey Capao will give a public lecture from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the Red Cross Conference Room on Chapel Street in Charlestown. Dr Capao is an internal specialist at the Alexandra Hospital in Charlestown.

Charlestown’s Memorial Square will be a beehive of activities on Friday March 9, with a health fair taking place between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Mrs Pemberton has called on all residents to take time to learn a thing or two about this disease even if they do not have it, as knowledge gained today could be useful in the future. Leading the fair will be Dr Glenville Liburd and Nurse Anaesthesias Sherolyn Pemberton.

The week of activities comes to an end on Saturday March 10 with a radio talk show Good Ole Days on Nevis’ community radio station Choice 105.3FM, which will be hosted by popular presenters, Mr Chesley Davies and Mr Walter Morton. Panellists will include Nurse Sherolyn Pemberton, Dr Capao and Mrs Pemberton.

“Our our goal is to have and to help support the operations of a haemodialysis unit for our patients,” said Mrs Pemberton in reference to society’s future. “The Nevis Renal Society is working in conjunction with the Ministry of Health to establish such a unit and we are seeking assistance from well-wishers.”
