BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DESPITE the fact that their images would be caught on camera and the consequences may include incarceration and certainly shame, some individuals do not believe in the idiom “honesty is the best policy” and they continue to shoplift.

Yesterday (Mar. 6), SKNVibes was summoned by the management of King’s Pavilion Supermarket at Port Zante and was told of a shoplifting incident that occurred shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Friday (Mar. 2).

“At approximately 7:10 p.m., two men entered the supermarket and headed towards the isle where a variety of liquor is on display. One of them was shielding the actions of the other while he picked up a bottle of Beehive Brandy and put it in his crotch. But what they did not know is that a male employee was observing their movements on the monitor facing the entrance to the supermarket.

“After leaving the isle and was about to pass the cashier, the employee approached the man who stole the Brandy and said, ‘Excuse me’. The man, who suspected that he must have been seen committing the illegal act, said, ‘I come here with me @#x+%# thing…wah you want?’

“The employee held onto him but after a brief struggle the man managed to free himself and ran out of the supermarket,” a member of the management team said.

A female employee told this publication that after freeing himself from the male employee’s grasp the shoplifter ran out of the supermarket. But on reaching the platform at the entrance, he jumped to ground and the bottle of Brandy fell from his crotch and she retrieved it.

She also said that the shoplifter ran away from the scene west along the Bay Road and that management had reported the incident to the police.

Over the past six weeks, shoplifters had targeted a number of business places in Basseterre and most of them were caught in the act. Two of them were jailed, one was fined and three are awaiting trial.

Apart from King’s Pavilion, shoplifters had targeted Lucky Cosmetics, Dufrey Shops at Port Zante, C&C Super Foods, Valu Mart IGA and J’s Shop and Save.
