Development Bank/Sandy Point Basketball League off to a flying start

    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, March 6th, 2012 -- The 2012 Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis-sponsored Sandy Point basketball league got off to a flying start at the Sandy Point Hard Courts, with two matches on Saturday night and another two matches on Sunday night. Early winners were the Alley Showtime, Fig Tree, Alley Construction Half Way Tree, and Playz.

     

    In the first game on Saturday night, the Alley Showtime overcame Prime Building Contractors Ltd/Wha-Do-U Basketball team 73-56. Outstanding on the Alley Showtime were Otis Daniel (18 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists), Clayton Powell (19 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals), and Kirt Simmonds (11 points, 3 steal and 2 assists).

     

    The losing side had R. Williams (10 points, 5 assists and 3 steals), G. Lewis (9 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals), and D. Rogers (8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals) as the top scorers. MVP for the first game was Alley Showtime’s Clayton Powell.

     

    Second and feature game saw Fig Tree Basketball team scrape through with a 70-64 win over Old School Fruta Falcons.  Outstanding in this game were George Gaton (14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals), Devon Farrell (13 points, 14 rebounds and 2 blocks), and Nashon Maynard (12 points, 25 rebounds, 11 blocks, and 5 steals) for the winning team.

     

    Making a mark for the Old School Fruta Falcons were Taslyn Hodge (16 points, 5 assists and 5 steals), Ansel Revan (14 points, 15 rebounds and 5 steals), and Javel Hodge (10 points, 6 assists and 8 steals). For his awesome performance, Fig Tree’s Nashon Maynard was named the MVP.

     

    Sunday night produced a nail-biting game with Any Thin Cun Happn Basketball team narrowly going down 72-77 to Alley Construction Half Way Tree Basketball team. On the winning team, top scorers were Eston Williams (27 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals), A. Joseph (14 points, 12 rebounds and 1 steal), and Benjamin Thomas (13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals).

     

    Any Thin Cun Happn had Auckland Connor (29 points 5 rebounds and 9 steals), Kayton Blake (28 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists), and Dalton Jeffers (8 points, 4 points and 2 steals) as their top scorers. MVP for the match was the winning team’s Easton Williams.

     

    The second and featured game, on Sunday night, saw Playz Basketball team dominate to a 73-54 win over Running Suns Basketball team. Troy Wattley (26 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists), Kemo Duncan (23 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists), and Sheffin Bloyce (8 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals) shone on the winning team.

     

    Levi Fyfield of Running Suns returned 16 points, 4 assists and 3 steals, while the other high scorers on his side were Greame Browne (11 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists), and Wayne Jones (8 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals). Running off with the MVP award was Playz’s Kemo Duncan.

     

    Action continues this weekend at the Sandy Point hard courts with two games on Saturday night and another two games on Sunday night. Nine teams are entered for this year’s league which according to the Secretary of the Sandy Point Amateur Basketball Association, Mr Leroy G. Benjamin Jr. has been sponsored by the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis.
