BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TODAY, all over the world – in every community, village, country and hemisphere – women will be meeting to tell their stories and seek solutions.
Women who have blazed a trail reaching to the very top of their careers will be talking of the road they travelled and the tough rough ride they endured as they persisted with hope and determination to achieve their goals.
Inspiring women leaders and activists from around the globe will gather in New York City at a ‘Women in the World Summit’ from March 8-10 2012 to address the most urgent challenges facing women and girls.
They will discuss far reaching issues such as the price of forced marriages, the price war is taking on women especially over the last year women of the Middle East and Africa. Their topics will embrace the economic, cultural and social impact present day challenges that have to be met by women and what solutions can be applied.
In our Federation, women are making strides in education but this is yet to push them into the political sphere as the number of women in our political world never seems grow.
The rumours are spreading, though not substantiated with statistics, that more and more women are selling their bodies to make ends meet or to pay for their needs or wants.
On a day like today, International Women’s Day, women are asked to remember their value and their strengths and the major responsibility they have in shaping the next generation.
The poem below is dedicated to all women today:
Women have strengths that amaze men
They carry children, they carry hardships,
they carry burdens
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
And laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in.
They stand up for injustice.
They don't take "no" for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without new shoes
so their children can have them.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel and
cheer when their friends get awards.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They have sorrow at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they think
there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all sizes, in all colors and shapes.
They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show
how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what makes the world spin!
Women do more than give birth.
They bring joy and hope.
They give compassion and ideals.
Women have a lot to say and a lot to give.
There is only one thing wrong with her:
she sometimes forgets what she is worth."
