Vendors injured in Bay Road traffic accident

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT was a strange scene at the Bay Front yesterday (Mar. 17) with a vehicle deposited in the sea, two vendors injured and persons trying to make sense of what transpired.

The incident resulted in four elderly persons being transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment.

Contacted by this publication, Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department explained that at about 8:10 a.m., 82-year-old Clarence Bridgewater of Russell Village was driving motorcar PA4345 along the Bay Road in an easterly direction and, while in the vicinity of the Public Market, he lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle ran up onto the sidewalk on the seaside of the road before striking two vendors and depositing in a collection of water just below the nearby bridge.

Bridgewater and his lone passenger 89-year-old William Semper of Russell Village as well as vendors Sarah Edwards of Lower Monkey Hill and Edith Richardson of Saddlers were all taken to the hospital for treatment.

SKNVibes understands that persons around the area assisted Bridgewater and Semper in getting out of the vehicle and back on dry land, and assistance was also provided to the other victims.

The Traffic Department was summoned to the scene and SGT Amory told this media house that the incident is still under investigation.

He said Edwards suffered a broken left leg while Richardson complained of pain in her left leg.

He also informed that the driver and his passenger complained of back pain.

All were treated and discharged with the exception of Edwards who was detained for further medical attention.
