Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, March 16th, 2012  – Bursts of laughter erupted from a lively audience as parents and children tested their knowledge of each other at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), “How Well Do You Know Your Teenager” game show.

The programme, held last evening, March 15, at the school, served as a family fun activity to celebrate Education Week 2012 currently underway in the Territory under the theme, “Creating a Culture of Excellence Through Prevention and Intervention”.

The game show, hosted by ESHS Principal Ms. Melissa Amey, showed eight color-coded teams competing in two-rounds of questions geared to test their intelligence of each other. At the end of the rounds, the father-son team of Information Technology Student Mr. Odelcer Hanley and his dad, Mr. Spencer Hanley emerged victorious, missing only one question.

A close second was placed by Mr. Glenford “Chappy” Maduro and his son Mr. Machino Chappy Maduro.

In an interview with the Department of Information and Public Relations Mr. Hanley said, he was happy to be a part of the programme and emerge victorious at the end.

He said “You could not study for the questions that were asked. You had to know your child and I am pleased that we were able to win the competition.”

He encouraged fathers to “Continue to recognize the role that you play in your child’s life and be actively involved and engaged in their development.”

The “How Well Do You Know Your Teenager” is part of activities for Education Week 2012 being celebrated in the Territory from March 11 - 17.

The week will culminate with the first Education Summit on Saturday, March 17th at 6:30 pm at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium. Under the theme, “Building the Local Knowledge Base for Global Competitiveness” panellists will lead discussions on the challenges facing the Territory’s Education System and devise solutions to move forward.

Education Week is an annual event hosted by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Department of Education to highlight and instil the importance of Education to the Territory.
